All Eyes to the Skies at Picnic Basket Day

Look twice if you see a giant horse, whale or alien spaceship flying in the sky as you drive toward Killarney Picnic Basket Day next weekend – it is all part of what is sure to be an amazing day.

These remarkable creatures on display above the lovely grounds of Melrose Station have been brought to visitors by the members of the Redcliffe Kite Club for the past three years.

“The day is just lovely, it is a fantastic drive out there and a lovely little part of the country”, President of the club and regular attendee, Michael Crowley, said.

“The great thing for us is the challenge of the wind. It behaves differently inland. “

The club’s regular flying area is Clontarf on the Redcliffe Peninsula, where they are part of the Redcliffe KiteFest in mid-June, but they travel all over Australia and the world to fly their kites.

“I have just got back from Qatar where a sub section of the club was flying kites as part of a team in the Aspire Kite Festival at Doha”, Mr Crowley said.

An astronaut kite may be seen sky walking alongside regular favourites at Melrose Station this year if the wind is favourable, but one animal will still be missing.

“We have been trying to get an Angus Cow Kite to fly for [Melrose Station owners] the Lindores, but haven’t got one yet”, Mr Crowley laughed.

The Redcliffe Kite Club is dedicated to fostering the age-old art of kite flying and kite making.  They will be selling kite making kits on the day so children can join in in the display in the skies.

Killarney Picnic Basket Day will be held on Sunday 7 April 2019, from 10am to 4pm.  Guests are invited to bring their picnic blanket and chairs to set up on the grounds and enjoy food from a wide variety of stalls, delight in the giant kites and be entertained by raffles and musicians at the relaxed event.

Proceeds from the day to Livin’ and the QCWA Public Rural Crisis Fund.
